Edwards Island was named in 1886 by Lieutenant J. M. Helm, U.S. Navy (USN), for charting purposes; name published in 1887 on U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (now part of NOAA)) Chart 706 (USGS).
